RUGBY: A LATE penalty and converted try denied Oldham St Anne’s a share of the points in a close encounter at Higginshaw Road.
Saints competed throughout but Dewsbury Celtic finished the stronger to take a 24-16 victory in the Kingstone Press National Conference League Division Two clash.
Both defences were on top until the 25th minute when Celtic man-of-the-match Richard Tillotson spotted a rare gap to touch down. The hosts were soon on level terms as Callum Cashin dived over in the corner. At the break it was 4-4.
Saints’ star player Ryan Powell and half-back partner Greg Worrall worked well together, and in the 45th minute the latter put Saints ahead after a Carl Fields break. Zac Javed added the goal.
Celtic hit back as Tillotson broke down the left wing and Sam Holleran was on hand to touch down. Mathew Sheridan levelled with the conversion.
Saints then found themselves behind after a Mike Foulstone try and Sheridan goal. Not to be outdone, Worrall went in for his second try, and with Javed kicking the goal, the match was back in the balance at 16-16.
But hopes of a Saints victory under brothers Andy and Peter Deakin were dashed when a successful Celtic penalty was followed by a Josh Brooks try and Sheridan conversion.
