Taylor is top rod

ANGLING: THE Rochdale Canal fished well for the King of the Valley teams of six match, with organiser Darren Taylor (Ryburn) taking the individual plaudits with a superb effort.
He netted a hundred or so small roach on squatt over groundbait before switching to caster tight across for some big roach which together weighed 8lb 10oz. Steve Ashworth (Maver NW) enhanced his fine record at the venue with a second-best net of small roach that fell to bread punch fished at eight metres and weighed 7lb 12oz.
TONY Simcock (Tight Lines, Shaw) and Rod Illing tied for first place in the latest of the Twingates AC OAP matches on the club water with both weighing in 4lb 7oz.
CHRIS Oliver won the latest Todmorden AS match on Croft. Fishing short pole and feeding up to four pints of caster, he caught roach, skimmers and ide to finish with 42lb 4oz. Pete Mottram was second with 27lb 8oz.
THOUGH weights are down in the Medlock Bridge AC open matches on the park lake, turn-outs have been good. But no new anglers who compete in these open matches will be eligible to win the bonus peg money of £480. Saturday’s match saw Joe Rowan win for the second time on the trot with two f1s and a skimmer taken on pole and maggot giving him 5lb 12oz. Pete Cuniffe was second with 4lb 2oz.
I TOOK part in the Angling Trust canal pairs on the Wigan lengths of the Leeds and Liverpool canal on Sunday, but sunny conditions, boat traffic and many cycles on the towpath made for a low-weight affair.
I managed just 2lb 13oz of small roach and skimmers, which gave me decent points in the 50-peg section. But my partner drew a terrible peg and together we couldn’t raise enough points, so just missed the final qualifying place. Adam Jagger (Tricast Rochdale) took the individual event with 14 small skimmers on red maggot to weigh in 7lb 1oz and qualify with partner Tony Price for the big final during the last weekend in October.
THE first of the Pennine Winter League matches will be held on Sunday on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Slaithwaite. With 10 teams of six taking part and and with the likes of Wigan, Tricast Rochdale and Maver NW battling it out alongside organising club Matrix Halifax and Tricast Calder, this promises to be a cracking series.
