WERNETH stalwart Lily Bevins was presented with flowers by lady-captain Kay Broughton to mark her 90th birthday.
Despite her age Lily remains a regular in 18-hole competitions at Werneth and other local clubs.
In 2010, she partnered Fiona Dooley to win the Cheetham Dugdale knock-out, a major board competition; and in 2011 she joined Paul Rowbotham to land a major at Werneth, the mixed knock-out competition.
Lily is the sister of Joan and Joe Swindells, both Werneth members.
WERNETH women played for the Breakthrough Brooch, which was won by Brenda Martin with a score of 99-23-76. Christine Moon and Sheila Antrobus won the first division sweeps, while second division honours went to Dee Whittingham and Sylvia Dempster.
ASHTON were gallant runners-up in the prestigious Archie Preston foursomes competition.
They were beaten 4-3 by a strong Pleasington team in the final at Houldsworth.
The match was decided when Ashton’s Steve McGee and Sylvia Haq lost 1 down at the 18th hole when their opponents holed a 15-foot putt.
Andy Lomas and Diane Williams (3 and 2), Neil Hallsworth and Susan Barlow (3 and 2), and Stephen Barlow and Gail Robertson (1 up) were winners in the final for Ashton.
Out of luck were captain Antony Lambert and lady-captain Rachel Wood (lost 3 and 2), Frank Shaw and Kay Patrick (3 and 2), and Lee Butterworth and Anna Lomas (4 and 3).
