JOE Jacombs scored on his debut as Royton Town eased their way into the second round of the Manchester League’s Gilgryst Cup at the Oldham Academy North.
Jacombs (28), who signed for Town from Uppermill only four days before the game, was delighted to help his new team achieve victory.
He said: “I’m made up because it was a tough game against a previously unbeaten side. It was great to get a goal on my debut.”
Town manager Mark Howard said: “I am very pleased for Joe and I am even more pleased that we now have 11 leaders on the pitch — it saves me from doing a lot of shouting from the touchline!
“We were never in any danger because our defending was excellent. It meant the ball never got to the feet of their forwards.”
Neat build-up play allowed Michael Moss to edge Town ahead on the stroke of half-time. Jacombs made it two with 20 minutes left.
It’s back to league action tomorrow for the unbeaten Premier Division leaders when they make the short journey to Ashfield Crescent to take on fifth-placed Springhead (2pm).
At the other end of the scale from Town are bottom-placed Uppermill, who have had a baptism of fire in the top flight.
