Buckley targets ’Mill pick-me-up

FOOTBALL: UPPERMILL are still looking for their first win in the FBT Manchester League Premier Division.

A solitary point from their first seven games means Uppermill face a tough job to hold on to top-flight status after working hard to get there. They were also knocked out of the Gilgryst Cup 2-0 at home by Prestwich Heys last weekend.

Despite the poor start Paul Buckley, who has taken over the managerial reins, said: “Injuries and not having a settled side have taken their toll. We are not quite up to speed with certain things and maybe we aren’t quite good enough.”

Buckley (52), who had to step down at Chadderton due to ill health, has a job on his hands to turn things around for Uppermill. The once free-scoring striker can see some positive signs, though.

“It’s about looking to the future. We have some great kids at the club who will only get better with each game.” His team faces a tough game at Rochdale Sacred Heart tomorrow.

There was better news for Avro and Royton Town in the Gilgryst Cup. Avro defeated Atherton Town 3-2, while Town cruised to a 2-0 win against visiting AFC Monton.

Springhead lost 3-2 at home against Dukinfield Town.
