SADDLEWORTH came from four shots back to beat Crompton and Royton and claim their fourth successive Oldham and District Captains’ weekend PVC Trophy in Grantham.
A day-high score of 43 by captain Charles Nicholson and past captain Andy Dunster was the decisive move on day two on the Woodside course. And with vice-captain Ken Barnes and president John Moon also winning their match with 35 points, Saddleworth romped to a 10-point winning margin.
Lewis Marland, a past captain at Brookdale, saw his Team Belfry take the 12-a-side Charity Cup 6.5-5.5 in a Ryder Cup format. Stuart Whittle holed the winning putt in the last match on the last green as he and Gary Simpson won both their matches, a feat emulated by team-mates Mark Abbott and Joe Loughman.
In the eight years of the event, Saddleworth have claimed the main prize five times.
