Double on the day for Abbott

GOLF: WERNETH’S Mark Abbott produced a memorable double when he landed two major trophies in a day.

First he beat Paul Rowbotham 5 and 3 in the final of the Challenge Trophy singles matchplay, producing three birdies and chipping superbly to see off Paul who, even though in top form, couldn’t get the putts to drop.

The duo then paired up to take on Lee Rowbotham and James Buckley in the final of the foursomes.

Lee and Buckley were looking to do a double of their own having earlier in the week won the fourball betterball cup, but it was the Abbott-Rowbotham combination that triumphed on the last green, three-under-par to their opponents’ two.

A second round 72, following on from a 76, saw Scott Salway clinch the Club Championship at BLACKLEY. He had 148, two shots better than Gareth Saxon (75+75=150) and Daniel Speight (151).

In the championship subsidiary, the overall winner was Keith Bolton (40pts), over Mike Clinch (39) and Alan Rigby (38).

Billy Smith took the Division One spoils with 38 points, while Ian Hulbert claimed Division Two (35pts) and Kevin Bolton was successful in Division Three (37pts).

Brian Robinson won the Medal Champion event at ASHTON after returning 85-16-69, from Dave Clarke (90-19-71), who was runner-up on a card play-off from Simon Baxendale (76-5-71).
