He landed the club championship with a two-round total of 138 (67+71), from Gary Melling, who had 72 and 69 (141). Andrew Simpson was third with 144.

Sutcliffe was also celebrating at the club’s “All Finals” day, winning the scratch knock-out. Again he overcame the challenge of Melling by 3 and 2.

The mixed foursomes knock-out was won by Tony Costello and Zoe Styles, who defeated Paul W Harrison and Carina-May Tierney 1 up.

Rob Riley and Michael Cattlin defeated Henry Dyson and Chris Clark 2 and 1 in the “Top Dogs” knock-out, while victory in the Highfield Cup (singles knock-out) went to Andrew Bottomley, who defeated Matt Kershaw 1 up.

Richard Hughes took SADDLEWORTH’s President’s Prize competition after a sparkling second-round score. An opening 18 holes of 71 at the Mountain Ash course was followed by a superb 64 as Hughes denied Charles Walker by one shot.

Walker had rounds of 69 and 67, with Stephen Pullen on 68 and 69 in third place.

The first and second round prizes went to Guy Godwin and Philip Paxford respectively.

Round one of OLDHAM’s final major of the year, the Dunkerley Cup, was cancelled due to bad weather and will now be played on Saturday, with the final round 24 hours later.

Using a nine-iron down wind, Phillip Dockerty bagged himself a hole in one at the 142-yard par three 16th during the pro competition at Oldham. Victory went to Wayne Adamson with 38 Stableford points.
