RUGBY UNION:
REJUVENATED Oldham returned from Whitehaven with an impressive first North Lancashire and Cumbria League victory of the season.
It was a scrappy affair from the off, with Whitehaven opening the scoring after 10 minutes from a penalty when Oldham found themselves offside.
Energetic flankers Ryan North and Luke Roscoe were active around the pitch, with the former dominating the lineout and the latter making his trademark hits. Will Mellor was always busy around the breakdown and Oldham spent long periods in their opponents’ half. It was no surprise when they were awarded a penalty try that Callum Meagram converted to make it 7-3.
Oldham’s dominance continued and Nick Hackman drove over from short range to increase the lead just before half-time, with Meagram once again converting.
Whitehaven reduced the deficit to 14-6 with a penalty, but after the restart Robert Froggatt was sent off following a melee and Meagram kicked over another penalty.
Oldham had the final say when their powerful pack scored a pushover try, which Meagram converted from wide out, to make the final score 24-6.
