AMATEUR FOOTBALL: HEYSIDE recorded their first win of the Huddersfield League Division One season in style as they romped to a 5-1 victory against Heywood Irish at Crompton House.
The hosts had to come from behind after a Heywood striker rounded goalkeeper Zack Grimes to make it 1-0. Heyside responded and after 22 minutes defender Gary Schofield was on hand to nod in his first of the season from a Johnny Pauley corner.
Despite dominating possession, the home side had to wait until the 35th minute to go into the lead when Mark Hopwood finished well from outside the box.
Last season’s Division Two champions made it 3-1 when Hopwood notched his second. Pauley made it 4-1 in the 70th minute with a curling finish from the edge of the box, before James Leonard bagged his third goal of the season with a close-range finish to give the home side a well-deserved victory.
Elsewhere in the top flight, Diggle were beaten 4-2 at home by Skelmanthorpe.
It was derby day in Division Three, with Moorside being held 2-2 at home by Uppermill.
ROYTON Town’s great start to the Manchester League season continued with an 8-1 Premier Division thumping of Rochdale Sacred Heart.
Carl Caffrey led the way with a hat-trick, while Alan Beckett, Wayne Dean, Danny Gilmartin, Craig Schumann and Arron Scholes were also on target.
It was derby day at Springhead, where visitors Avro took the spoils thanks to a 3-0 victory.
Uppermill were defeated 3-0 at Tameside outfit Dukinfield Town.
There was further disappointment in Division One as Hollinwood lost 6-4 at Heywood St James’, while Chadderton’s second string were beaten 3-2 at home by Pennington.
Avro’s reserves and their Springhead counterparts shared eight goals in a thrilling clash in Division Two.
