GOLF:
PAUL Jackson’s tremendous second round of 68 clinched him the captain’s prize at Saddleworth.
Jackson was among the pack after a first round of 72, but his stunning 68 for 140 gave him a three-shot victory over Allan Entwistle on 143. Phil Paxford was third with 73 and 72 for 145, while the round one prize went to Nigel Hughes (74-6-68) and round two honours to Tad Knebel (75-7-68).
Meanwhile, Vivian Lewis (Huddersfield) and Lynn Lewis (Meltham) shot a nett 70 to win the Millgate Trophy at the same course.
Roy Downing and Sue Booth (72.5) were runners-up, ahead of Tony Issacs and Linda Newman (73), who beat Jeff and Lilian Howarth in a card play-off for third. Kevin Rafferty and Denise Brown (73.5) were fifth.
Best gross for the Eric Milne Trophy went to Manchester’s Jamie Heywood and Elaine Clarke with 81.
Steve Smith was nearest the pin on hole two, while the honours on the 15th went to Gerry Snook.
WERNETH’S seniors made home advantage count when they romped to victory in their annual triangular match with fellow 2009 centenary clubs Mold and Runcorn.
With 18 players scoring from each club in a shotgun start, the match has been going for seven years and is often a tight affair.
But this time around, Werneth averaged nearly 34 per player for a total of 610 and a comprehensive victory over Mold (525) and Runcorn (488).
Top three-ball of the day was a 110-point tally for a trio of single-figure handicappers in home player Kevin Roberts, Bill Ridler (Mold) and Gordon Mayne (Runcorn) — the latter notching the best individual score of the day with 42 points. This was Werneth’s second win in the competition.
ASHTON’S Luke Kelly was a gallant runner-up in the Lancashire Under-16s Championship at Penwortham. One handicapper and defending champion Kelly and Hillside’s Oliver Ravenscroft, who plays off three, both shot 69s, but the latter’s birdie three on the final hole enabled him to snatch the prize on countback.
CROMPTON and Royton’s Millennium Trophy, a four-ball, better-ball event, was won by Brenda Keaney and Jennifer Kenworthy with 30 points. Second, following a card play-off, were Val Hall and Gwyneth Littlewood with 28.
L LIDDLE and C Morris won the Daily Mail foursomes event at Blackley with a return of 73.5.
D Hurst and B Roberts (74) were runners-up, followed by H Sloan and J Royle (75.5).
Meanwhile the EGM Bunty Booth competition saw another victory for L Liddle after she carded 97-27-70. Next came S Salmon (103-30-73) and K Ruddy (94-20-74).
OLDHAM RUFC’S golf day at Blackley attracted 11 teams of four for a Stableford competition in which the top three scores on each hole counted. Top of the pile was the team of Mel Garner, John Martin, Dave McGovern and Stuart Bradbury with 109 points.
