Kays: still plenty to fight for

BOXING: JON Kays knows he can’t afford to take his eye off the ball tomorrow when he fights Dunfermline journeyman Michael Stupart at the Manchester Velodrome.

Kays (32) was scheduled to face city rival Adrian Gonzalez, but the young hopeful opted against risking his so-far impressive professional record against tough-guy Kays.

But the Hurst Cross warrior has vowed to knuckle down: a fresh title tilt has been pretty much guaranteed for the autumn providing he wins with style on Saturday

“I was a bit gutted when I was told Gonzalez didn’t want to fight me. Maybe he thought I was a bit too dangerous at this stage of his career. I’ve still got a job to do. I need to put in a good performance and win well.

“I’ve got big plans. I lost my British title fight against Gary Sykes last summer, but I’ve always said I belong at that kind of level and I need to get back in the mix. There’s plenty of life in this old dog yet.”

Super-featherweight Kays will bid to make it 21 wins from 26 fights in the paid ranks tomorrow.
