NUMBERS GAME: Derek Ashford (left), Mike Cocker, David Whaley and Tony Doidge played fourm rounds in one day at Werneth.
GOLF: THE numbers certainly added up when Chronicle managing editor David Whaley and three friends completed the 72-hole Macmillan Longest Day Golf Challenge.
The quartet of David, Derek Ashford, Mike Cocker and Tony Doidge completed the four rounds at Werneth in an impressive 70-under par with two-to-count Stableford rounds of 89, 92, 85 and 92.
They started at 5.30am and rolled in the last putt just after 7.30pm. And the number they were most proud of was the £3,000-plus raised for charity.
“Our good scoring amazed us and certainly kept us going on the last round when we were beginning to feel the strain,” said David. “When we came in to find out that more than £700 had been raised on the tombola and raffle to boost the sponsorship we realised it had all been worthwhile.
“Other golf clubs in the area have sent in money which is really appreciated and the support of the members at Werneth was fantastic.” They previously did a 72-hole challenge in 2013
