Buckley celebrates fatherhood in style

GOLF: FORMER Werneth captain James Buckley had a week to remember.
On Monday he became a dad for the first time and at the end of the week he steered his Roofmaster team to a second victory in five years in the Joseph Parr (Alco) sponsored Werneth Pro-Am.
They won the competition in 2011 with an 18-under-par total of 118 and repeated the score this time round for a one-shot victory in the popular 33-team field event.
Their cause was certainly helped by the performance of professional Matthew Webb, who also topped the paid-man rankings with a personal six-under-par 62 which matched that of Timothy Dyke from Penrith.
THERE were some eye-opening scores in round two of the captain’s prize at Oldham, which saw Danny Marland come out on top with a superb nett 60.
Steve Halliwell was runner-up, on the card, from Steve Warburton, after both returned nett 62s.
Duncan Eastham and Brett Worrall scored 45 Stableford points to win a better-ball event.
Next came Paul Donlan and Owen Williams with 42 points, following a card play-off with Geoff Proctor and Mark Furnival.
CROMPTON and Royton have pushed themselves into the play-off reckoning in the Oldham Golf League’s ‘A’ Division East.
A 6-2 victory over Werneth while the other four clubs in the division were drawing 4-4 brought Andy Bottomley’s team into the mix - especially as they have a game in hand.
And the High Barn club’s ‘B’ team have also given themselves a good chance of a post-season after a 6-2 win at hapless Werneth.
C and R are one of three teams locked on 24 points — the others, Denton and Fairfield, fought out a draw as they battle for second spot behind runaway leaders Ashton.
In the ‘A’ Section’s West Division, Dukinfield hung on to top spot with a draw at North Manchester, but Blackley are closing in and also have a game in hand.
Stamford and Oldham look favourites in the ‘B’ Section West Division after both won well this week.
