BOWLS: MARK Sutton (Ashton Cricket) walked away with a terrific first prize of £130 after winning the Saddleworth League’s Sharpe Cup at Friezland.
The competition, sponsored by Len Sharpe, saw Sutton defeat Springbank’s Wilf McDermott 21-10 in a final which was much closer than the score suggests.
The semi-final between Sutton and Steve Mellor (Nimble Nook) produced some excellent bowls.
Sutton led 18-11, but Mellor hit back to go 20-19 in front before his rival found two great bowls for game.
ROYTON’S John Ashton lost in the second round of the JW Lees £1,550 Classic at Hopwood, 21-10, to Liam Griffin of Leeds. Earlier, Ashton defeated Mark Sutton (Ashton Cricket) 21-10.
