IT’S going to be a rip-roaring derby day at the Manchester Velodrome for local super-featherweight favourite Jon Kays on July 11.
Ashton-based Kays (32) will face fellow Tamesider Adrian Gonzalez in the mega-show. The derby tussle could also see the WBO European title belt up for grabs for the winner, though that is still to be confirmed.
The Gonzalez fight presents a big chance for Kays to get back in the title mix after losing in the 10th round against Gary Sykes last summer.
He has enjoyed two routine points victories since, but the Velodrome date offers “2 Smokes” the opportunity to steal some limelight as he faces a highly-rated opponent.
Kays, who currently has 20 wins and a draw in a 25-fight professional career, said: “I think a lot of people will feel this is going to be another straight-forward win for Gonzalez as he makes his way up the rankings. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“If anyone is thinking along those lines they’ve picked the wrong opponent this time. I’m 32 and he’s only 24, but I’ve got plenty of life left in me yet.”
The Velodrome bill promises a showcase night of championship boxing on July 11. Manchester hero Terry Flanagan will headline the ‘turbo’ card as he challenges American knockout king Jose Zepeda for the vacant WBO World lightweight title. The show also features British stars Billy Joe Saunders, Liam Walsh and Jack Catterall in title action, while Paul Butler, Tom Stalker, Steven Lewis, Joe Costello, Macauley McGowan and Andrew Cain complete the undercard.
