THREE became one yesterday after Moorside were left to fly the Saddleworth and Cricket League flag in this season’s LCB Cup.

The Turf Pit Lane club beat St Anne’s, from the Northern League, by 26 runs to set-up a third-round tie against Uppermill’s conquerors, Bootle, on Sunday, July 5.

Professional Grant Hodnett struck 53 and Rick Harrington 52 in Moorside’s all-out total of 185.

Kyle Hodnett, who is enjoying a purple patch with the ball, then took four for 26 in his nine overs as St Anne’s were skittled for 159. Lee Warburton, James Baron and Harrington also bagged two wickets apiece.

Glodwick suffered a six-wicket loss off the penultimate ball of the match at home to unbeaten Lancashire County League leaders Prestwich.

Paid man Rehan Rafiq continued his excellent form with the bat, making 106 from 110 balls in the hosts’ knock of 258 for eight. Mark Whitehead compiled 45 and Brad Heap smashed 19 from just five deliveries faced, including three sixes.

Requiring nine from the last over, Prestwich crossed the line with a ball to spare. Opener Mike Hudson hit exactly 100.

Uppermill faced the overwhelming task of scoring 337 in 45 overs to beat Bootle, from the Liverpool Competition, at Leefields. They were eventually dismissed for a creditable 163, after number eight James Chamberlain swatted 57 from only 26 balls, including seven sixes and two fours.
