Age no barrier for Lachlan

LACHLAN Carver proved he can still show his younger rivals a thing or two by winning the Brookdale Cup at the age of 72.
Carver, the Scottish junior champion in 1960, has the distinction of having his name on the honours board next to that of the great Jack Nicklaus in the R and A cluhouse at St Andrews.
And he will also be seeing his name on the Brookdale roll of honour after winning the major with a return of 39 Stableford points.
Andy Fry, whom Carver beat in a card play-off, must have thought he was in with a big shot of winning his second major when he scored nine points in the first three holes of the back nine.
But in trying to protect his score, he dropped a couple of points and, on returning to the clubhouse, he discovered he had been pipped by the old timer.
Third, after a card play-off, was last year’s Chronicle Cup winner Keith Skinkis-Loftus with 37 points.
It has been a week of great stories at Brookdale, with Karl Jones getting in on the act on the way to victory in the professional’s competition No. 8.
Jones achieved his first hole-in-one at the 11th hole when his five iron struck the path to the left of the green before shooting out of sight.
After looking for Jones’s ball, one of his playing parters found it in the hole.
Jones, who registered a winning score of 40 points, won a Boss Hole In One watch from How-Did-I-Do to mark his achievement.
Anthony Boyle was second in this competition with 39 points, while third place went to Keith Miller (38).
Steve Uren won the professional’s nine-hole competition with 19 points, beating Craig Evans in a card play-off.
