Action from the green Final bowls qualifiers
Bowles:
KEITH Gledhill will bid to achieve what his son, Ben, failed so narrowly to do in 2014.
In last year’s Green Final Handicap, Ben (Royton) was a gallant semi-final loser at North Chadderton, watched by his proud dad.
Twelve months on, Ben was a second-round casualty at Nimble Nook, while club-mate Keith was triumphant in the qualifiers at North Chadderton.
After defeating Martin Hodson 21-15, Keith overcame John Owen 21-20 before defeating Peter Guilfoyle 21-9.
Ben, meanwhile, won his first game at Nimble Nook, 21-18 against former finalist Lee Schofield.
But he then found Matt O’Neill too strong, the Springbank ace recording a 21-19 verdict before booking his place on finals’ night at Royton on July 4 with a 21-18 win against Darren Mountford (Moorside).
John Ashton (Royton) reached finals’ night once again with a 21-4 victory over Paul Edwards at Delph.
Earlier, Ashton had seen off the challenges of Scott McHugh and fellow Greater Manchester man Stephen Leach, while 2013 champion Darren Griffiths fell 21-20 to Edwards.
The other heat at Moorside saw 2013 runner-up Matt Gillies (Nimble Nook) cruise through.
After beating Eddie Worthington 21-11, Gillies overcame Jimmy Hynes by the same score and, finally, Wilf McDermott, 21-9.
Four more heats will be held this Friday (7pm).
