RUGBY:
SADDLEWORTH Rangers will attempt to break the world record for the longest-ever game of touch rugby to help raise money for a new clubhouse. And you could be involved.
Taking place over the bank holiday weekend starting on August 29, every side at the Greenfield club will take part. On half of the Shaw Hall Bank Road field, 28 volunteers will keep a game going for 30 hours solid, beating the existing record set by Waterloo RU club in 2012. The club is hoping its juniors and past players will play a second 30-hour game.
“This is going to be a brilliant weekend for everyone at Rangers,” said chairman Shane Wilson. “We will have a great time, raise lots of money towards the clubhouse and hopefully write ourselves into the record books.”
The attempt begins at 10am on August 29 and the record hopefully broken after 4pm the following day.
To be one of the 28, players need to be over 18, fit and mentally tough enough to go the distance.
Each side needs to have at least six players on the pitch at all times. Organisers also need a second group willing to do a 12-hour stretch from 9pm-9am, so every adult who wants to be involved can be.
There will also be guest appearances from professional stars with a link to the club.
The fundraising plan is for each player who takes part to get sponsored and local companies will be asked for their support.
For information, message the club on Facebook or call Kevin Fitzpatrick on 07801 741070.
