Rangers closing in

RUGBY:

Saddleworth Rangers coach Craig Farrimond was disappointed by the result, but proud of the performance of his side, which squandered a 26-6 half-time lead in a 36-26 defeat at National Conference League Division One high-fliers Kells.

It was a ninth loss for the Shaw Hall Bank Road outfit, which remains rooted to the foot of the table.

Until the midway stage, it had been all Rangers. The advantage of a big slope gave them tries from Ethan Langhorn (two), Tom Dransfield, Jack Bradbury and Gareth Caudwell. Josh Bradbury landed three goals.

But Kells came back in the second half with wave after wave of attacks to snatch victory.

Farrimond, who could only call on 16 players for the trip to Cumbria, said: “Kells are a big, strong set and when they came at us down the slope, they were hard to stop. That first win is coming, though. We’re getting closer all the time.

STAR centre Alex Chatterton went on a four-try spree as Oldham St Anne’s were beaten 31-18 by Underbank Rangers at Higginshaw Road.

Three well-worked tries in the opening quarter from Josh Denbigh, Mick Fogerty and Dave Harris put the home side in control of this NCL Division Two clash.

The visitors from Holmfirth gradually started to turn the screw, however, and Craig Williams went in.

Chatterton then got in on the act with the first of his four tries. Joel Croker kicked a goal.

Saints replied when Matty Whitehead side stepped several defenders to score, and with Jordan White converting, the lead was up to 18-10.
