Worrall happy to pin faith in Saints youths

NEW first-team coach Mick Worrall says his players must earn the right to pull on the Oldham St Anne’s jersey.

The proud ex-Oldham RL and Great Britain forward won’t stand for any nonsense from his charges as he attempts to lift ailing Saints away from the depths of National Conference League Division Two.

Mick Fogerty has decided to step down and will be taking a break from the game, but intends to return to playing for St Anne’s in the future.

The coaching reins have been handed over to his assistant Worrall, and he is demanding 100 per cent dedication. He also won’t shy away from throwing in Saints’ youngsters if they show enough drive and enthusiasm required to mix it at senior level.

“The club needs a wake-up call and commitment,” said Worrall. “The players have got to turn up for training for starters, because if they put in the effort, they will get their rewards. The club has to become one unit, from which we can move forward.

“This isn’t a problem that solely lies at the foot of St Anne’s door or in the Oldham area, though; it’s a problem for amateur rugby league in general. We’ve got a nucleus of first-team players and we’ve also got some good young players coming through.”

Five defeats in as many league matches have left Saints second to bottom, while tomorrow’s visitors Leigh East sit third in the table.

SADDLEWORTH Rangers, who are also without a win in Division One of the NCL, have a good chance of

breaking their duck at third-bottom Milford Marlins tomorrow, while WATERHEAD Warriors go to

fourth-placed Dewsbury Moor Maroons.

Mick Slicker junior’s side are still searching for their first league points after six attempts.
