CRICKET: WICKETKEEPING legend Alan Knott exited Test cricket at the Oval; Australian great Rod Marsh chose Sydney, and Jason Maher thought it would be a good idea to bow out at Old Trafford.

Almost three decades after joining his first club, Oldham, as a bright-eyed 11 year old, Maher has called time on his career.

The Bamford Fieldhouse ’keeper’s last game was the LCB Cup final - a fitting end as the Hollin Lane side celebrated a memorable success over Northern.

“I made the decision before last weekend,” said Maher (39). “I am still going to be involved at Bamford and help out the best way I can. Hopefully we can push forward and win the national knockout now because that’s what we are after.”

Maher, alongside the likes of other well-known local players Darren Shadford, Stuart Moore and Paul Thompson, came through the ranks at Oldham. Other than Oldham and Bamford, Maher has played for Austerlands, Uppermill and Crompton.
