AMATEUR FOOTBALL: THE Knowles family were to the fore as Weavers Arms registered an emphatic victory over Failsworth Dynamos in this D and J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League relegation clash at Snipe Clough.

Weavers were second-from-bottom of David Giblin Division One before kick-off and were out for revenge against basement side Dynamos, who won the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

It was a welcome return to action for Weavers who were playing their first match in six weeks, having had the misfortune to see their scheduled game a week previously called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

Adam Biggins was the Weavers hero with a well-taken hat-trick, but it was the ‘Knowles factor’ which stood out as the main feature in an entertaining match.

Weavers’ secretary Martin Knowles (53), had to take charge of the match after the non-appearance of an official league referee and his first reaction after the 90 minutes was to worry about how his legs would be in the morning!

The fact that Martin’s two sons, 30-year-old Martin junior and Kevin (28) were both in the Weavers’ side simply gave the match an interesting edge.

And while Kevin was among the goalscorers, brother Martin junior was nonetheless busy as the goalkeeper – conceding just once in the last minute – in what was an intriguing clash.

Dynamos gave their all throughout the contest, but it was Weavers who emerged with three priceless points in their bid to avoid the drop.
