ATHLETICS:
ROYTON Road Runners celebrated a memorable season by crowning two new club champions at their annual presentation night.
Carole Madden produced impressive performances throughout the year to claim the women’s title for the first time, relegating defending champion Debbie Shaw into second place.
Stuart Carroll, who had secured the overall club championship honour as early as July, was also rewarded for a great season with the Ian Casey Marathon Trophy for setting a new club record for the marathon.
The award is named after a much-missed former club member.
Mark Kelly was a popular winner of the Rod Bowers Trophy for club runner of the year, recognising his great work with the ‘Run in England’
beginner groups, his contribution to park run and his amazing improvement in race times in 2010.
In recognition of the remarkable growth of the club this year, Joanna Bird received a special memento as the 100th member.
It was also announced that Dr Kershaw’s Hospice would be the first Royton Road Runners charity of the year, and the club is already planning various fundraising activities to support this cause in 2011.
Royton Road Runners welcomes athletes of all standards, aged 18 and over.
