Rampant Mossley in New Year goal rush

NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: MOSSLEY survived a late fightback by Clitheroe to clinch a 3-2 win at Seel Park in Evo-Stik League Division One North.
Andy Watson put the Lilywhites in front after just five minutes. Kristian Dennis doubled the advantage eight minutes later. When he struck again just after the half-hour mark, Shaun Higgins' men were in cruise control.
But the visitors didn’t give up the fight. Danny Williams pulled a goal back after 65 minutes.
And when Tom Williams found the net for Clitheroe with six minutes remaining, it set up a tense finish. The hosts hung on to claim three points.
Mossley went into yesterday’s game on a high following a 4-3 victory at Woodley on New Year’s Day.
Matty Kay was their hero with a hat-trick, two of his goals coming from the penalty spot.
Dennis scored Mossley’s other goal, while Sam Walker (two) and Mark Gee were on target for the hosts.
SHAUN Nolan pounced twice for Chadderton in their 3-1 win over Abbey Hey in Vodkat North-West Counties League Division One.
His two early efforts were both powerful drives from 20 yards.
The away side pulled one back after the interval.
But just after the hour mark Joe Fitzgerald's 40-yard pass found Adam Edwards, who lobbed the ’keeper to ensure the victory.
Chadderton manager Paul Buckley said: "It was a bit tense when they got a goal because for 20 minutes after that, they were the better side.
"But our third goal killed the game as a contest.
"It is a great way to start the year."
OLDHAM Boro conceded a late equaliser as they drew 2-2 at Rochdale Town.
The hosts took the lead 10 minutes into the second half with an easy header.
Boro responded with a spell of sustained pressure and Darren Scanlon levelled in the 65th minute.
Scanlon was on hand to give the visitors the lead shortly after with a close-range effort from a corner.
But sloppy defending allowed Town to score a carbon copy of their first goal with seven minutes remaining.
Boro boss Tony Mills said: "Considering we have not played for a while, it is not a bad result.
"We are just disappointed because we were in a winning position.
"Having said that, our goalkeeper Callum Hannigan made a couple of great saves near the end, so overall it is probably a fair outcome."
