TABLE TENNIS:

DARRYL Meredith produced the best performance of the week in Division One of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League — but his efforts were vain.

The Werneth ‘A’ player won all three of his singles and teamed up with Jon DePledge to claim a doubles victory, only for BAE ‘A’ to come out on top by a 6-4 scoreline.

Honeywell ‘B’ defeated Hollinwood ‘B’ 9-1 — a result which did not do the youngsters justice.

A youthful Hollinwood team displayed plenty of determination, and pushed their more experienced opponents all the way in a clutch of close games.

Peter Fowler and Tommy Ryan were undefeated for Honeywell.

There was a top-of-the-table clash in Division Two, with Werneth ‘C’ emerging victorious against Hyde YMCA ‘A’.

It was a sweet 7-3 win for Werneth, who were avenging their only defeat of the season so far.

Mandy Winskill and Karen Hill were undefeated for Werneth, who now lead by two points. However, nearest rivals Hyde have a match in hand.

Paul Rourke, of Hollinwood ‘D’, boasted an unbeaten record against Honeywell ‘D’ and was instrumental in earning a draw for his team, who are yet to win this season.

Paul Carter and Brian Hall won two each for Honeywell.

In Division Three, Honeywell ‘F’ produced a fine performance to hold title-hopefuls Owls to a 6-4 defeat.

The Owls team had Colin Ogden to thank for their success. He won his three singles and partnered Dave Harthan to victory in the doubles with the scoreline at 4-4.

Aaron Rowbotham was superb for Honeywell, winning two and only losing to Ogden on deuce in the fifth.

Leaders St Saviour’s swept aside third-placed Unison ‘C’ 8-2, courtesy of trebles from Brian Huskinson and Alex Leach.

In a topsy-turvy game in Division Four, Coppice and St Saviour’s ‘B’ fought out a 5-5 draw.

Fred Pickles was unbeaten for Coppice — he claimed three straight games — while Jacob Reilly and Mark Pellowe won two each for the Saints.

The match between Werneth ‘F’ and Coldhurst ‘D’ also ended all-square at 5-5.

Only one game was decided in three sets.

Dave Jefferson and Alan Else won two apiece for Werneth, with Wayne Carter and Phil Mellor repeating the trick for Coldhurst.
