ANGLING: CHADDERTON Mill AC ran a competition on their club water and despite members having to break through six inches of ice, the fish still fed freely.
Winner was Mick Tighe whose 17lb catch with his double red maggot fished on the deck at nine metres netted him three carp and plenty of ide.
Second best was Lee Humphries with an all-ide catch which weighed in at 12lb and was caught on double red maggot fished at full depth.
That was just a fish or two too many for Aiden Bordiak, whose pellet fished at four metres tempted lots of hand-sized carp totalling 11lb.
Fourth-placed Conrad Taylor (Gilders ) had a catch of 10lb 10oz which included a carp and ide taken on corn and maggot.
The club is running a Boxing Day open match on the club water. Draw is at 9am with the match fished from 10am to 3pm. Tickets cost £15 all-in. To book, contact Lee on 07522 156978.
TODMORDEN AS members fished an iced-up Rochdale Canal at Smithy Bridge, but had some fine catches.
Steve Ashworth came out on top with 9lb 4oz of roach on bread punch and whip, while Dave Bradley, with 8lb 4oz of roach using the same method, was runner-up. Next came Alan Bedford with a respectable 4lb 10oz.
This Sunday the club is fishing the third round of its winter league with Graham Mitchell in front, Aiden Bordiak second and organiser Lee Humphries third.

Venue Guide
Park lake – Frozen solid, as are all the local waters. Anyone brave enough to break the ice could do worse than use bread punch. Feed fine liquidised bread and hardly any of it. Day tickets are available on the bank.
Huddersfield narrow canal – Frozen and don’t expect too much. Take your ice breaker with you as you will need it. Day tickets cost £5 on the bank.
Rochdale canal – The ice had to be broken a few times in matches on this venue, but roach and skimmers were still caught. The only bait worth using is bread punch.
Chadderton Mill lodge – Was fishing well even when iced up and anglers breaking ice to fish have had double-figure catches with silvers and carp showing. Bread punch worth a go, as is the usual maggot and pellet.
