NETBALL: OLDHAM under-16s maintained their unbeaten start to the Greater Manchester League season with a 63-24 win over Charlestown.
The local outfit struggled at times, but still proved too good for their opponents from Salford.
Harriet Gill linked up well at centre, while the solid defensive pairing of Ashleigh Cruse and Ellie Wild turned over the ball on a regular basis to set up Oldham attacks.
Oldham’s next game is against Tyldesley NC on Sunday at Wright Robinson College.
Coach Mike Greenwood said: “Despite the result, this wasn’t our best performance of the season, but we have done what we needed to in order to qualify for the regional league, starting in January.”
OLDHAM under-14s flew out of the blocks against Stockport in the Greater Manchester League, winning the opening quarter 18-6 before going on to complete a 52-26 victory.
Goal attack Hollie Joyce led the way with some great attacking moves as Oldham quickly built up a big lead.
However, the second quarter was a different story. Stockport fought back and to compound this Oldham’s goal shooter Natalie Hulme suffered an injury and was replaced by Grace Kumiter.
The deficit was 10 points at the
interval (25-15), but the introduction of Rhian Messam at wing defence and a stern talk at the break, revitalised Oldham.
They surged into a 44-20 lead and, with a further eight points in the final quarter, victory was sealed.
Coach Jackie Reid said: “All the girls stepped up to the mark.
“Hollie Joyce was the player of the match, despite being under the weather. She put in a great performance.”
