SNOOKER: PRIDE was at stake when seven of Oldham’s best snooker players took on a select group from Huddersfield in a challenge match at Springbank Bowling Club.
And it was the town’s cuemasters who left the visitors from other the side of the Pennines green baize with envy after recording a 6-1 win.
However, the result was secondary to the occasion, which was the first of its kind and proved a great success.
Danny Gleeson got the Oldham team off to a flying start after compiling a 37 break.
Martin Kennedy was unlucky to lose the second frame, but Mick Webb restored Oldham’s lead with victory in frame three.
Webb was on course for a fine clearance of 57, until missing a difficult long blue to the corner.
Danny Reece added another point for Oldham, compiling the highest break of the day (47).
Mick Smith piled on more heartache for the White Rose county with a typically clinical display, which included breaks of 18 and 27.
Nick Broadbent then compiled a 42 break on his way to adding the sixth frame, before Martin Merrington came out on top in the final frame which went down to the final black.
Meanwhile, Little Cot extended their lead at the top of the Oldham Amateur Snooker League with an emphatic 6-0 win.
With one game to go before the season reaches its half-way mark, Cot are guaranteed to reach the turn at the summit as they are 10 points ahead of nearest rivals St Paul’s.
Andy Pickup was the star of the show down at Oldham Boro, who overcame North Chadd 4-2.
He produced a clearance of 51 in the fourth frame to defeat A Smith.
Six-hit Moss cut lead
MOSS Inn moved within two points of table-topping Comrades ‘A’ after whitewashing Royton Cons 6-0 in the Saw-Tech Snooker League.
S Bramwell was man-of-the match for Moss with a fine break of 37. Comrades ‘A’ managed a 4-2 win over reigning champions Tara Leisure.
It was a hard-fought affair, with Comrades winning the aggregate by one point.
