TABLE TENNIS:

IN an Oldham and District Table Tennis League Division One relegation tussle, Coldhurst ‘A’ went down to a 6-4 defeat at BAE ‘B’.

BAE’s Mick Hill was the star of the show, notching a treble, and he was ably supported by a brace from Ian Byrne, while Derek Whatmough replied with a double for Coldhurst.
Rosehill and Grotton were involved in a ding-dong battle, which culminated in a 5-5 draw.

The former clinched a share of the spoils after winning the final doubles 11-8 in the fifth set.

Shaun Ellis showed something of a return to form with three victories for Grotton.

Division Two promotion-contenders Uppermill ‘A’ and Werneth ‘C’ went head to head, and it was the latter who came out on top 6-4.

Karen Hill recorded a treble for Werneth, which included two hard-fought five-set victories.

Doug Hill also won two, with Keith Moores repeating the feat for Uppermill.

Unison ‘A’ and Hollinwood ‘C’ were engaged in a close match in which no player was unbeaten.

Unison did go 4-1 up, only to trail 5-4. However, victory in the doubles secured Unison a draw.

In Division Three, high-flying Owls ‘A’ found themselves 2-0 against lowly Uppermill ‘C’, but they recovered to win 8-2.

Former Uppermill player Dave Harthan was unbeaten for Owls.

In a basement battle at Unison, the ‘D’ team eventually went down 6-4 to Honeywell ‘F’.

This was despite the efforts of Unison’s Peter Roberts, who won his three games without losing a set.

Blue Coat are improving rapidly in Division Four, and pushed Deaf ‘C’ all the way before succumbing 6-4.

There were plenty of close games, with Chris Smith of Blue Coat, winning two. Alan Cockcroft and Gary Mills also bagged doubles for Deaf.

Callum Allman, of Our Lady’s ‘B’, continues to impress, claiming a hat-trick this week in the 7-3 defeat of Owls ‘B’.

His father, Dean, also won two for Our Lady’s, while Dinesh Gorasia enjoyed a double for the Owls.
