GOLF: OLDHAM’S Anthony Cavanagh is one of 32 golfers bidding for glory in next week’s Audi Quattro UK cup final.
Anthony, from Hathershaw, will fight for the right to represent Britain in the week-long world finals in Sardinia.
He will be partnered in the UK pairs contest by Albert Hickman from County Durham. The top two pairs will qualify for a place in Sardinia.
Anthony (44) plays at Stamford Golf Club and qualified for the UK finals thanks to a second-place finish in regional heats in Milton Keynes last month.
And he is confident of his prospects in the UK finals, stating: “I have got experience from a similar tournament in which I played well so that will help. I have definitely got a chance.”
He added that the pain of missing out on a trip to Spain in a previous final will help spur him on this time around.
“Hopefully I can go all the way and make it to Sardinia,” he said.
The UK finals will take place at the Bowood Golf and Country Club near Calne, Wiltshire.
