Hughes lifted by hot Springs

HAMPTON Springs lived up to its reputation in the latest open event to be held at the venue.

The Fishery throws up decent nets of carp, barbel and silvers off every peg, even in the winter months.

And that was the case when Jamie Hughes weighed in a superb 57lb 1oz of chub and carp on maggot and pellet.

Second place went to Tameside rod Colin Mayor (Drennan NW), who had 56lb of carp, which included about 15lb of crucians on the long pole, corn and pellet.

I’ve enjoyed some cracking days at Hampton Springs this year, with nets of at least 80lb every time.

o PAUL Jones is almost unbeatable on carp waters — and he was to the fore in the latest of the Blundell Fishery open matches.

Drawn on East lodge peg 11, he had 52lb 10oz of carp on pellet across.

Second-best was Keith Padmore, of Tameside. He had a mixed net featuring skimmers and small carp — his biggest specimen tipped the scales at 4lb — and they were attracted by corn and pellet at 14 metres. Alan Howarth was third with 46lb 10oz.

o ANDY Bennett is a regular money-winner on the circuit, so it was no surprise that he took top-spot in the Brookside Fisheries open.

Situated on the Snake Lake, he denied another Tameside rod, Mike Rogerson, with 51lb to 50lb 10oz.

Bennett opted for the pellet at 11 metres to net carp to 2lb, with Rogerson employing identical tactics.

John Battersby was third with 50lb.

Venue Guide

Ashton Canal: As well as it fishes in the summer, this venue can almost seem barren in comparison in the colder months. However, pegs on the scrapyard and Kershaw Lane lengths usually attract a few fish. Red maggot, bread punch and chopped worm are as good as anything.

Bottoms Reservoir: Not many venturing out onto this vast and open water but anyone willing to put up with the elements can have a cracking days sport with the tip and pole with maggot and bread punch good for chub and roach.

Bone Mill Dam: Red maggot is best bait.

Stonepits: Bread punch and red maggot for skimmers and roach.
