Local sides in County Cup clean sweep

THE County Cup proved a happy hunting ground for sides from the D&J Builders (North-West Ltd) Oldham Sunday League.

Limeside Athletic ‘A’ and Highfield United, from David Giblin division one, were too good for Moss Tavern ‘A’ and FC Broomhouse respectively.

Failsworth Athletic, bottom of the Jack Abbott premier division, recorded a morale-boosting 1-0 victory at North Reddish Working Men’s Club, and Oddies Athletic hit Clarendon Dons for nine.

Because of County Cup ties, only one match went ahead in the top flight, where FC Royton brushed aside FC Broadgate 6-2 to lead the table by two points.

Fitton Hill Rangers stretched their lead to five points in division one after a 7-3 defeat of Red Star, while Royton Athletic lost ground in the title race after they were beaten 2-0 by Wellington.

Parkside added to Shajahal Unity’s woes with an emphatic 8-0 success, and Bridge Inn overcame Westwood 2-1.

Rifle Range Royal Blues made it six wins out of six with a 4-0 defeat of Oldham United, while Famous King George posted a 9-3 victory at home to second-placed Northside.

North Star Athletic picked up their first point of the season thanks to a 2-2 draw at Royal Oak, and Lark Inn and Crompton and Royton remain in the promotion picture after wins over Springhead Libs and Limeside Athletic ‘B’ respectively.
