Barretts claim Top Dogs title

FATHER-AND-SON Mark and Stephen Barrett are the ‘Top Dogs’ at CROMPTON and ROYTON.
They triumphed in the final of the four-ball matchplay knock-out bearing that name with a 2 & 1 victory against Gary Melling and Andrew Simpson.
The final of the Highfield Cup, the singles knock-out, saw Mark Barrett defeat David Norbury at the first extra hole as the match went to sudden death.
Chris King and Ross Hendren beat Peter Meggison and Maureen Nicholson 6 & 5 in the final of the mixed foursomes.
The Howard Trophy, for the best six nett scores over the season, went to junior captain Robert Calow (402) from second-placed Tony Sutherland (406).
And the eclectic, for the best score at each hole during the season, saw Andy Allen take the gross score with 51 and Robert Coates the best-nett prize with 47.
Winners of the closing-day team medal were father-and-son Chris and Robert Calow, Bradley Cannings and Andrew Hirst with 124. They finished three shots clear of Mark Sinfield, Steve Oldham, Richard Flynn and Steve Sharrock.
OLDHAM also staged their finals day with brothers John and Chris Bramall capturing the H B Swailes Trophy after beating Dave Taylor and Gary Lee by one hole in the four-ball matchplay knock-out.
The Firth Trophy, the mixed knock-out, produced a win for Martin Lewis and Ann Smith who defeated Clive Newton and Joyce Beech 3 & 2 in the final.
And in the final qualifier for the Daily Mail Foursomes, Rick Fallon and Paul Butler defeated David Bailey and Mark Furnival 3 & 2.
Winners of a four-ball better-ball Stableford were Frank Lawrence and Gordon Howard (46pts), on the card from Lee Newsome and John Stringer. Third were Gary Williams and Pete Sparks (45).
Top spot in a singles Stableford went to Andy Dowd (40) from Dave Ganley (38) and Alex Simmons (37).
Stuart Potts emerged victorious in The Wharmton — a major competition at SADDLEWORTH - beating Mike Shore in the final of the singles matchplay knock-out.
Beaten semi-finalists were David Chapman and Steve Harrington.
Chapman just missed out again in the captain’s charity day.
He had to settle for third place alongside Tim Edwards after the first three pairs finished on 44 points in the Stableford format.
John Parker and Dave McNeil pocketed victory in a card play-off against Mike Taylor and Stuart Cox.
Ron Bowden and Mark Henshaw were stirred to success in the WERNETH Spoon, scoring 73 points in the aggregate Stableford.
Runners-up were Paul Egan and Paul Handley (72pts), on the card from John Stockley and Brian Donnelly.
STAMFORD’S three-man all sixes competition was won by Carl Varey, Alex Martin and Rob Irving with a score of 82 points in the Stableford event.
Runners-up were John Healey, Kevin Barber and Alan Booth (80), on the card from Keith Coxon, Guy Hall and Colin Farr.
BLACKLEY’S end-of-season medal was won by Dave Garside (73-6-67), on the card from Terry McManus (86-19-67).
Third was Alan Lane (69-1-68) on countback from Richard Larkin (91-23-68) and Dave Bauser (77-9-68).
Gary Smith (72-7-65) took top spot in the first division of BROOKDALE’S winter qualifier.
Runner-up was Doug Jones (72-6-66) from Stephen Murphy (77-9-68) and John Uren (78–9–68).
Heading division two was Barry Wiltshire (81-14-67) from Phil Picken (86-18-68), Mike Coleman (83-14-69) and Paul Goulden (82-13-69).
OLDHAM vice-captain Ian McGloughlin came out on top in the two-day Oldham and District Captains end-of-season finale, played at Belton Woods, Lincolnshire.
McLoughlin won with rounds of 35 and 43 Stableford points for a 78 total to pip Saddleworth captain Dave Pullen by a shot.
McGloughlin’s 43 points came on the second day when partnering Brookdale captain Lewis Marland to victory on the Woodside course, while the first-day prize on a windswept Lakes course went to Pullen and Crompton and Royton past captain Mike Jackson (36pts).
Saddleworth romped to a 10-point team win and 291 total through Pullen, vice-captain Nigel Cooper, president Frank Pullen and guest John Knight. Brookdale and Crompton and Royton tied for second.
