Squires comes up to scatch

ALAN SQUIRES had a weekend to remember at OLDHAM where he won two events in the space of 24 hours.
The 60-year-old from Moorside defeated Lee Blainey 6 & 5 in the final of the scratch matchplay knockout, the 10th time he had won the competition.
And that followed victory in the first division of the monthly medal the previous day when we shot 66-0-66 - three shots ahead of Rick Fallon (73-14-69) who was runner-up on the card from Matthew Radcliffe (81-12-69).
John Smith (80-14-66) took the honours in the second division on the card from David Bailey (79-13-66). Third was Mark Ruff (83-14-69).
Winners of a two- man Texas scramble were Terry Kelly and Roger Stansfield with a score of 55.8.
Runners-up were John Bramall and Steve Mills (56.9) while third were Eric Charles and Mark Pownall (57.2), on the card from Dave Ganley and Geoff Proctor.
Jack Ingham landed the Mountain Ash, the final major of the season at SADDLEWORTH. He had nett returns of 68 and 69 for a two-round total of 137.
Runner-up was Martin Orme (68 and 70 for 138), on the card from Andy Long (67 and 71).
The second-round winner was Jack Shaw (76-9-67) from Peter Collinge (84-16-68) and Ingham (84-16-68).
Paul Turner triumphed in The Grasshopper Trophy, the final major of the season at WERNETH. His 78-14-64 was three shots clear of Mark Timperley (83-16-67).
John McDonald topped the final standings in the Autumn Cup at BLACKLEY with nett rounds of 72, 66 and 65 for 203.
Patrick Ruddy (71, 68 and 65 for 204) was second while third place went to Julian Robinson (68, 70 and 71 for 209).
The third round of the Autumn Cup was won by Mike Smith (70-5-65), on the card from Barry Anderson (78-13-65). Third was Ruddy (72-7-65).
Bob Irving won the first-division prize in the monthly medal at STAMFORD following a return of 78-9-69.
Alan Hood (81-14-67) had the best score in division two while the leading player in third division was Martyn Taylor (88-18-70).
Peter Walker (77-11-67) claimed the first division prize in the third winter qualifier at BROOKDALE.
Second was Duncan Baird (76-7-69), on the card from Geoff Clarke (81-12-69) and Paul Wood (75-6-69).
Jimmy Butt (85-18-67) headed the second division from Doug Unsworth (82-13-69), Neil Buller (86-16-70) and Barry Wiltshire (84-14-70).
Winners of a four-ball betterball Stableford were Trevor Mayo and Albert Brogan (41pts) from Danny Berry and Doug Jones (40), Brian Storey and John Somers (38).
Four pairings returned 40 points in a four-ball betterball Stableford at CROMPTON AND ROYTON. Gary Melling and James Frizzell won on the card from Steve Pass and Alan Watson, Alistair Cameron and Kris Sutcliffe and Steve Sharrock and Mark Sinfield.
