SPRINGHEAD FC are putting plans in place to set up a disabled team.
The Ashfield Crescent outfit have received a grant of £1,600 from Voluntary Action Oldham to kick-start the initiative with the aim of playing competitive football in 2010/2011.
Springhead chairman Peter Dowd: “Rather than rushing things for this season, we want to do it right and give ourselves a good 12 months of preparation.
“It is still very early stages and we’re looking to speak to someone with indepth knowledge in this area, so this money will come in very useful.”
Springhead recently received the FA Charter Standard Community Club Award from the West Riding County FA.
This accolade recognises that clubs have the infrastructure in place to cater for senior men and women, juniors and disabled football in the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, Springhead and Athletic joined forces to launch Oldham’s ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out Of Football’ campaign.
It took place at Springhead’s local derby with Royton Town in the Manchester League.
Both teams had ‘Kick it Out’ patches sown on to their shirts, and these will be worn for the rest of the season.
Prior to the game, Springhead were presented with ‘Kick it Out’s’ One Game One Community banner to promote the campaign at a local level.
Jamie Blood, Oldham Athletic Community Trust and Football Development co-ordinator said: “It is great to see a local community charter standard club supporting and promoting this campaign.
“It has proven a great success in the professional game and with the support of local clubs, like Springhead, the campaign will soon have a massive effect in the grassroots game.”
