A PLACE in round two of the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Rhodes Cup competition was at stake when local rivals AFC Oldham 2005 entertained Santos AFC.
And it was the hosts, from a division higher, who went through thanks to a 2-0 win.
Santos started the brighter of the two sides, but it was AFC Oldham who made the breakthrough.
They had a great chance of adding a second before the break, but ’keeper Thomas Keating saved the penalty.
Santos were on the back foot soon after the restart, but they stood firm until succumbing to a second AFC Oldham goal, despite vociferous appeals for offside.
But the visitors refused to throw in the towel, missing a one-on-one and having a goal disallowed for offside.
There was disappointment for Oldham Victoria reserves in the first round of the Wray Cup.
Three goals adrift at the break, they eventually went down 5-0 at Spurley Hey.
Santos reserves were beaten 4-2 at home by Barr Hill, and AFC Oldham reserves lost 4-1 to Alkrington Dynamos.
