Diggle pay for misses

DIGGLE FC endured a frustrating afternoon in division one of the Huddersfield and District League.

Steve Southern’s side completely bossed Hepworth — they hit the woodwork on four occasions — but were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal in the 2-2 draw.

Behind after half an hour, the Diggle players suffered a dressing down from their manager at the break and emerged for the second half with a steely determination.

However, despite their almost total domination, they had to wait until the 80th and 83rd minutes to see any reward for their efforts.

The equaliser came from Keith Martin — he scrambled the ball home from a corner — before Jeff Whittaker put Diggle ahead from 10 yards.

But Hepworth refused to be beaten and scored a brilliant leveller from a free-kick with the last kick of the game.

While Diggle remain unbeaten, Uppermill are still searching for their first win of the season after going down 2-1 at home to Shepley.

Dave Taylor equalised for the hosts with an exquisite lob after they had gone behind against the run of play.

Uppermill had a goal disallowed close to the interval and looked the more likely to score.

However, the second period was a different story. Shepley started to run the game and midway through the half they capitalised on some poor marking to go ahead for a second time.

Heyside maintained their fine start to life in division four with a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Linthwaite Athletic.

Goalless at half-time, they broke the deadlock on the hour mark through a James Taylor strike.

Heyside continued to press and were rewarded with a second goal 10 minutes from time courtesy of Andrew Oakes.

Leaders Diggle reserves maintained their 100-per-cent record in reserve division one with a 4–1 win over Cumberworth, and goals from Matt Poulter and Adam Wilson sealed a 2-1 win for Uppermill over Meltham ‘A’.

Diggle ‘A’ are leading the way in reserve division two after a 6–2 defeat of Slaithwaite United.

But Heyside, who were forced to play with 10 men for more than 70 minutes, suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat at Honley.

The local outfit went ahead through Lee Watkinson, who was then forced off the field after picking up an ankle injury.

Honley hit back to score twice inside five minutes before half-time and, despite creating the better chances, Heyside were unable to find an equaliser.

In division two of the Works League, Uppermill had Steve Darraugh, Ian Johnson and Peter Ward on target in a 3-2 defeat of Kirkheaton.
