OLDHAM Aquatics swimmer George Harrington heads to Cyprus this month for specialist coaching.
The 17-year-old from Saddleworth, whose specialist event is the 100m butterfly, will receive tuition from some of British swimming’s top coaches.
The trip for Harrington, a member of Oldham Community Leisure’s Advanced Training Scheme, is part of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence.
Harrington, who also swims for Saddleworth, was chosen for the AASE programme through the Amateur Swimming Association, the sport’s governing body.
It is a two-year programme for athletes aged between 16/18 years who have shown potential and there are currently 230 athletes across all aquatic disciplines signed up.
The scheme provides specialist help towards his swimming and will also earn him an NVQ level three. He attends a number of training camps, though the one in Cyprus is the first venture overseas.
The AASE scheme also runs in conjunction with Harrington’s ‘A’ Levels which he is taking at Blue Coat School.
