Paul leads way to family treble

GOLF: THREE members of the Rowbotham family claimed top honours on finals day at WERNETH.

Father Paul was first in the winner’s enclosure when he secured a 5 & 4 victory in the final of the Mellor Cup, a 16-qualifier matchplay knockout, against Ian Wood.

Oldest son Lee then got in on the act when he holed a birdie putt on the last green to give himself and James Buckley a one-hole success in the betterball pairs knockout for the Hetherington Trophy against Lee Appleby and Kevin Hicken.

And the family were guaranteed a hat-trick when Lee took on younger brother Adam in the final of the singles knockout for the Challenge Trophy.

However, Lee could not repeat his earlier success when he had a putt on the same line for victory on the 18th and Adam rolled in an impressive 20-foot birdie putt down the green of the first extra hole for victory.

In the other major finals played on the day, Paul Glover and Mark Timperley came from two down with two to play to claim a 20th-hole success over club secretary John Barlow and 13-times club champion Les Dooley.

And Jane Fletcher claimed the The Spencer Cup, the women’s singles knockout, by beating Gail Rowbotham.

In the September medal there was a first-division victory for Chris Stanley (74-13-61) beating long-time leader Mark Wareing (70-9-61) on a card play-off.

And 83-year-old Eric Smith, who featured in the Chronicle golf section last week, showed his recent win was no fluke when he took the second division (85-22-63) ahead of Albert Park (85-21-64).

Jack Turner triumphed in Captain’s Final at BLACKLEY with a two-round nett total of 141 after rounds of 88-16-72 and 85-16-69.

Runner-up was Dave Allen (91-16-75 and 83-16-67 for 142) on the card from Andy Benton (83-11-72 and 81-11-70 for 142).

Julian Robinson had the best gross return with 72 and 74 for 146.

Earlier in the Captain’s Final 100 John Hall (85-18-67) headed that qualifier from Steve Hyde (75-6-69) and Mike Smith (75-5-70).

They top players went through to the Captain’s Final 50 which was won by Derek Peacock (76-8-68) from Tommy Cocking (87-17-70) and Brian Johnson (78-8-70).

Hyde lifted the John Smith Trophy after a return of 70-5-65.

Second was Andy Benton (78-11-67) on the card from Chris Benton (74-7-67). Fourth was Andrew Kendrick (82-15-67).

Winner of the monthly medal was Daniel Williams (81-17-64) from Callum Cornielle (81-16-65) and Mike Tarpey (81-15-66).

Mick Ganley had an emphatic five-shot margin of victory in the 36-hole Dunkerley Cup at OLDHAM.

He had scores of 73-11-62 and 74-11-63 for a two-round total of 125.

Runner-up was David Finn (68 and 62 for 130) while third place went to Lee Blainey (67 and 63 for 130).

The second-round winner was Finn (71-9-62) from Ganley (74-11-63) and Terry Garrett (69-6-63).

Incorporated into the Dunkerley Cup was the Veterans Trophy which was lifted by Finn (71-9-62) from Garrett (69-6-63) and Steve Mills (76-11-65).

Closing day invitation, a four-ball betterball Stableford, was won by Peter Sparks and G Webster with 46 points.

Runners-up were Garrett and Peter Griffin (45) while third were Dave Bruce and Dave Parks (44) on the card from Paul Butler and D Burgess.

Carl Varey and Alex Martin had a score of nine up against the course as they triumphed in STAMFORD’S J D Schofield Pairs Trophy, a bogey competition. Runners-up were Simon Flynn and Darren Dawson (8 up) while third place went to Paul Walker and David Lewis (7 up).

Lee Gladrey amassed 37 points to win a three-club competition. Second was John Jinks (36) on the card from Ian Hall.

Winners of a team medal at CROMPTON AND ROYTON were Gary Melling, Andy Simpson, James Frizzell and Dean Osborne who had a 16 under-par total of 124.

They finished two shots clear of runners-up Andrew Bottomley, Simon Moores, Jack Bottomley-Clift and Andrew Hurst.

Robert Calow headed the first-division field in a medal with a score of 74-5-69 after a four way card play off.

Cliff Wood (81-12-69) was runner-up, third was Peter Meggison (82-13-69) while fourth place went to Andrew Bottomley (78-9-69).

George Bray (89-18-71) took the honours in the second division from Steve Bower (89-17-72) who was runner-up on the card from Peter Hilditch and John Edmundson (both 91-19-72).

Gary Lever (70-5-65) topped the first division in the first winter qualifier at BROOKDALE from Gary A Smith (72-6-66) and John Uren (76-9-67).

Harry Smith (89-26-63) headed the second division from Tom Conley (81-16-65) and Brian Walker (82-17-65).

The Schofield Shield at SADDLEWORTH, an aggregate Stableford, was won by Martin Heap and Nick Marner with a score of 81 points.

Runners-up were Graham Widdall and Graham Wildbore (78) while third place went to Nick Sunderland and Chris Cuniffe (75).
