BOB HARRISON (Team HB topped the Medlock Bridge AC Saturday open match fished on a flat and sun-affected Alexandra Park lake.

The match was run as a rover where anglers pick the peg they want and Bob chose in-form 28 from where his pole and maggot tactics, fished at ten metres, paid off with 7lb 10oz of roach, chub, perch and skimmers.

Paul Lord has been figuring in a few of these matches and looked like netting himself a win with 15 chub in the first 90 minutes before they switched off and just one chub in the next three and a half hours relegated him into second with 5lb 15oz.

Billy Brierley (Team HB) caught three skimmers and some roach and perch on the pole and maggot for a third-best 5lb 9oz.

MALC TAYLOR (Gilders) is new to Oldham Central AC but has had a cracking season, netting himself first place in their recent match on Cudmore pool two.

Fishing corn down the edge in his corner peg, Malc caught a real mixed bag weighing 22lb 15oz with tench, crucians, barbel, roach and skimmers feeding well.

Darren Jones (Tight Lines) is having a super season, taking second with an almost identical net of fish for 19lb 10oz, while Keith Butterworth included a 6lb carp in an otherwise small-fish net of 18lb 1oz.

The club championship was won by Darren Jones with Malc Taylor the runner up.

THE Joe Mayers Memorial Shield match was fished on the Ferry Fields length of the River Trent and, although the weights weren’t the best, everyone had a really good weekend.

Most of those taking part went down on the Friday and caught some good fish, with barbel to 7lb 8oz and bream to 8lb all falling for feeder tactics while plenty of roach were taken on hemp and caster.

Come the match day and the venue didn’t fish as well, but Russ Bedford still managed a 25lb 12oz catch that included an 8lb 8oz bream and plenty of roach and perch falling to double red maggot fished in conjunction with a feeder.

Tony Buckley was second with bream to 6lb added to skimmers, also taken on double red maggot giving him 13lb 10oz.

Geoff Brierley was third with an 8lb 8oz bream making up most of his 10lb 7oz net, while Fred Prudham filled fourth with the best float catch of 3lb 12oz.

CONRAD TAYLOR (Gilders) is known for his big carp weights and in the Meadow View open match on Lark Pool he again took first place with 93lb 2oz of carp that took pellet at ten metres. Fish to 8lb eased him in front of Ricky Salmon’s 86lb 8oz.

THE Todmorden AS Trophy match fished on Croft was a decent affair with Lee Cavanagh weighing in 31lb 1oz of carp taken on the pole and meat.

Second was Mick Clegg with 17lb of ide and roach that took caster fished on the pole. Craig Howarth was third with 16lb 2oz of carp.

Venue Guide

Huddersfield narrow canal – SADAS waters fishing okay with the match length probably the best. Carp, skimmers and chub feeding.

Rochdale canal – This under-rated canal is having it’s best season to date with good nets of roach, skimmers, tench and bream from various lengths. Bread punch, caster and red maggot all catching, with pegs around the bridge at Middleton Road as good as any.

Chadderton Mill lodge – Still fishing well with pleasure anglers bagging up with carp and ide. Maggot up in the water or on the deck catching plenty of fish.

Park lake – Sport slowed but pleasure anglers catching a few fish with roach, skimmers and chub all showing.
