Glover snatches Fairway glory

PAUL GLOVER captured WERNETH’S final major of the season as he lifted the Fairway Cup.

But it was a nerve-jangling victory as he only won on the card after his return of 78-13-65 was identical to that of Steve Lynch.

A subsidiary medal was also held and this was won by Dave Royle (77-12-65) from Paul Turner (80-14-66) who was runner-up on the card from John Yemm, Paul Williams and Steve McNamara.

Yemm headed the field in a 13-hole Stableford after amassing 30 points. Second place went to Jack Cain (28).

Werneth completed the second leg of their centenary exchange with Runcorn with Dave Griffiths and visiting captain Gordon Maine taking the honours in the four-ball betterball Stableford with a score of 43 points.

BROOKDALE’S final major of the year, the Brookdale Cup, was won by Robert Ashelby with a score of five up against the course in the bogey competition.

Iain Thomas was also five up while Dave Welch and Chris Boyle (both three up) were third and fourth respectively.

Nick Kerin and Mark Riley claimed top spot in the President’s Invitation at SADDLEWORTH.

Runners-up were David Marshall snr and D Marshall jnr (44pts) on the card from Tony Isaacs and Iain Foulkes.

Division three handicappers took the first three places in the Lowe Trophy, the final major of the season at STAMFORD.

Darren Dawson (82-19-63) emerged the victor while second was Ron Hardy (84-20-64) on the card from Lee Hardy (81-17-64).

Dave Batty recorded the best gross score with a one-under-par 69.

Mike Ganley heads the field following the first round of the Dunkerley Cup at OLDHAM.

His return of 74-12-62 gives him a three-shot lead over Terry Kelly (76-11-65) who was second on the card from Steve Halliwell (85-20-65).

Winners of a four-ball betterball Stableford were John Bramhall and Geoff Proctor (45pts). Runners-up were Dave Finn and Alan Rotchell (43) on the card from John Wheaton and Colin Kost.

Grandfather and grandson Derek and Lee Conway were winners of a four-ball Stableford at CROMPTON AND ROYTON with 45 points, the same Peter Meggison and Graham Harper.

Brian Smithies (77-10-67) took the honours in the first division of a medal competition from Steve Smith (83-14-69). Mark Hopkinson (86-18-68) topped division two from Mike Hambley (88-15-73).
