Glodwick start as they left off

LAST year’s winners and runners-up, Glodwick and Werneth ‘A’, clashed at Glodwick in the first game of the new Oldham Table Tennis League season.

Reigning first division champions Glodwick come out on top 8-2 with Mark Ramsbottom scoring a maximum and being supported by doubles from Kamal Hussain and Jeff Craighill, who has returned to the league after a few seasons away.

Darryl Meredith and Gary Skinner replied with one win each for Werneth.

Honeywell A beat Grotton A by the same score with three from the newly-signed Phil Myers and two apiece for Dave Buckley and Gary Newton.

It was the same scoreline in the Hollinwood A v Honeywell B game thanks to a George Jones treble and two each from Colin Boardman and Nathan Buckley for Hollinwood.

Karen Hill’s treble was to no avail for Werneth C against Hollinwood B as they lost 7-3. Dave Cheetham, Phil Holmes and Joe Redikin scored two each on Hollinwood’s return to the top flight.

Werneth B and Saddleworth A shared the points..

Uppermill A triumphed 7-3 against Pennine in Division 2 with trebles for Mark Simpson and Keith Moores.

Both promoted sides clashed in a close match with Honeywell D defeating Droylsden 6-4.

Despite a tremendous performance from Werneth D’s Mike Pellowe with three wins they went down 7-3 to Honeywell C with Barrie Royle, Brian Higgins and Howard Travis all winning two for Honeywell.

Liaquat Ali, Mike Brierley and Andy Hey combined for Unison A to beat Hollinwood E 9-1.

Hollinwood D’s Andy Evans scored his side’s only points with two against Coldhurst A for whom Paul Howarth was unbeaten. Simon Walsh and Simon King scored two each for Coldhurst.

In the third division, promoted St Saviour’s A narrowly lost 6-4 against Coldhurst D, with Brian Huskinson scoring a maximum for the Saints. David England and Neil Chapman scored two each for Coldhurst and combined for the doubles.

Owls A team beat Honeywell E 8-2 with Richard Tamworth and Paul Woodward both notching trebles.

Coldhurst C and Unison B drew 5-5 while Coldhurst’s B team lost 7-3 at home to Deaf Club A with Peter Dawson scoring three and Ian Cockcroft two for the visitors.

Saddleworth were looking down the barrel at 5-0 against Uppermill’s B team but recovered to only lose 6–4. Keith Moores scored his second treble of the week and Jim Bradbury scored two for Uppermill.

Grotton B and Gilders drew an extremely tight game with Alf Barker and Alan Sarsfield scoring two each for Grotton and Martin Nicholls two for Gilders.

The youngsters of Our Lady’s C team were highly praised by their opponents Deaf Club C after beating them 7-3 in the fourth division, with ‘evergreen’ Ron Tench’s treble accounting for all the Deaf Club’s points. James Chappell, Matthew Kelly and Callum Allman all scored two each for Our Lady’s, with Chappell and Allman combining to win the doubles.

Leo Cogger was the star of the show in winning three for Honeywell F against Owls B for whom Dinesh Gorasia played well to score his team’s point in an 8-2 defeat.

In another close game, St Saviour’s B drew with Coldhurst E, Josh Poole scoring a superb treble for the Saints while John Greenwood and Andy Lees scored two each in reply.

There was a tough debut for Counthill against Werneth F with the visitors winning 10-0 despite the youngsters having some fine moments.

Likewise, the Our Lady’s A team suffered a 10-0 reverse against the experienced Deaf Club B team.
