Avro flying high after fifth win

Date published: 10 September 2009

AVRO were too good for Manchester Gregorians, the reigning Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League premier division champions.

Rob Fuller’s side recorded an impressive 4-1 win at Platt Lane — it was their first victory at the venue for three years — but they had to do it the hard way.

Behind to an own goal — a shot ricocheted off a defender — they deservedly drew level courtesy of an O’Brien free-kick.

Avro dominated the second half, with another long-range effort from O’Brien, plus further goals from Hampson and substitute O’Hanlon, clinching a fifth success of the season.

Hollinwood are two places below Avro in fourth after a 4-2 defeat of Walshaw Sports.

Springhead, who are hot on Hollinwood’s heels in sixth, had to dig deep to draw 1-1 at Old Alts.

The Ashfield Crescent outfit, who went behind midway through the second half, left to the last minute to restore parity.

Rick Wild’s header looped over the goalkeeper and Ryan Shaughnessy, who had an effort chalked off in the first half, was on hand to nod the ball home.

Royton Town missed a bundle of chances as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Prestwich Heys.

Adam Ruddock, who is quickly making a name for himself at Glebe Street, equalised from a Fraser Hatton cross early in the second half after Heys went ahead with a speculative shot.

Carl Caffrey hit a post before Heys regained the lead against the run of play, but Michael Moss levelled things up from the penalty spot.

Town had an opportunity to claim all three points in the last minute, but Ruddock was unable to convert the chance.
