Brothers claim Werneth prize

BROTHERS Joe and Mike Cassidy triumphed in the closing invitation at WERNETH after amassing 44 points in the four-ball betterball Stableford.
Chris Cordwell and Steve Wild (Saddleworth) were runners up with 43 points while third with 42 were Nick Stanley and Dennis Lamb (Saddleworth) on the card from Tim Joyce and Dave Garner (Brookdale), Paul McKee and Ken Gable (Fairfield).
CROMPTON AND ROYTON’S Zacharias Cup was won by Andrew Bottomley with a score of 78-10-69. Bernard Brame (75-6-69) was second while third place went to Andrew Simpson (74-4-70) on the card from Mark Barrett (76-6-70), Chris King (81-11-70) and Jordan Flint (74-4-70).
Graham Wildbore is SADDLEWORTH’S leading veteran after lifting the FV Rhodes Trophy. He scored 37 points in the singles Stableford to edge out Eddie Hall on the card for top spot. Third was Nigel Hughes (36).
A subsidiary for players under the age of 55 years was won by Mark Anderson-Wild (39 points) from Simon Cummings (38) on the card from Jamie Heywood.
Saddleworth were beaten 5-2 at Blackley in the Manchester Alliance Foursomes having had to surrender home advantage due to a fixture pile-up. Saddleworth winners were Nigel Cooper and Andy Dunster (1 up), Nick Marner and Steve Goodwin (1 up).
Blackley winners were Brian Johnson and Chris Thompson (4&3), John McDonald and Paul Marcroft (6&5), Julian Robinson and Ian Harrop (2&1), Andy White and Billy Radcliffe (3&2), Steve Newton and John Hibbert (3&2).
Finals day at BROOKDALE saw Terry Boothby beat Paul Green 4 & 2 over 36 holes in the singles matchplay.
Brad Keeling and Gary A Smith won the doubles title, beating John Strachan and Wesley Wellings 3 & 2. And in the 18-hole final of the Dr Fitzgerald, the mixed foursomes, husband-and-wife Peter and Maureen Parker beat Doug Unsworth and Angela Hunter by one hole.
Winners of a three-man team Stableford were Tom Conley, Roy Taylor and Mike Gray with a score of 78 points.
Geoff Cooke had a landslide victory in the monthly medal at BLACKLEY with a score of 87-18-69. Runner-up was Graham Slattery (92-18-74).
OLDHAM members Ian Radcliffe and Steve Squires both scored holes in one during competitions.
Radcliffe landed his ace at the 11th during Saturday’s four-ball betterball medal while Squires repeated the feat the following day in the mixed open Stableford, helping his team finish second.
Dave Bailey and Mark Furnival (56) headed the field in the four-ball betterball medal from Jack Roberts and Frank Lawrence (57), Clive Newton and Tony Boyle (58).
Winners of the mixed open were Brian, Mark and Fiona Weems and Julie Barton with a score of 82 points.
Singles Stableford: John Coleman (41 points) on card from Dave Ganley.
Kevin Duffy (74-8-66) won the first division of the monthly medal at STAMFORD on the card from Carl Varey (72-6-66) and Tony McCluskey (78-12-66).
Division 2: Duncan Byers (84-17-67), Martin Bardsley (81-13-68), Kevin Brown (85–17–68).
Division 3: Chris Deacon (85-23-62), John Jinks (87-20-67).
BLACKLEY members Gareth Morris, Alan Lane, Vinnie Doyle and Julian Robinson raised £6,000 following a recent golfing marathon.
The four played four courses in 24 hours - Hopwood, North Manchester, Pike Fold and their own course.
The money collected has been donated to Macmillan Cancer in memory of Vinnie’s wife Carol who died of the disease.
WERNETH’S open women’s shotgun team Stableford, was won by a composite team representing the hosts and Oldham.
The four of Pat Grant, Fiona Dooley, Jane Antrobus and Ann Smith amassed 78 points to win by four.
Sheila and Dee Whittingham and Hilda Garner, and Hopwood’s Elaine Bonn (74 points) were runners-up, on the card from Saddleworth’s Julie Warren, Brenda Hatherill, Rhoda Potts and Julie Ward.
