Willcock salutes Mossley spirit

MAKESHIFT Mossley drew 2-2 at home to Chorley in division one north of the UniBond League yesterday.

The Lilywhites were without eight players through a combination of injury, suspension and work and had three empty places on the substitutes’ bench.

There were also number of players operating out of position.

“We were desperately short of players, but the commitment of those who were here could not be faulted,” explained Mossley manager Chris Willcock.

Mossley took the lead midway through a dull opening half when central defender Graham Kay headed home a cross from Andy Watson.

But the Lilywhites conceded two goals in the opening four minutes of the second period as Terry Fearns and Chris Amadi profited from some woeful defending.

Mossley made it 2-2 after 72 minutes through a Matty Kay penalty after Kurtis Noble was upended by right-back Martin Clark.

In a frantic finish, Chorley had three great chances to seal victory, and Mossley might also have secured all three points when Matty Kay was free in front of goal, but he fired straight at ’keeper Zac Hibbert.

FORMER Wigan Athletic striker Chris McCaughtrie, signed from Leigh Genesis, made his Mossley debut in yesterday’s game.
