Molloy steps down

STEVE MOLLOY has quit as first-team coach of Oldham RUFC because of increased work commitments.

But the former Oldham Roughyeds player-coach, who informed the club after Saturday’s win against St Benedicts in the EDF Energy Senior Vase, has told the Manor Park club he is still keen to play for them when time permits.

Molloy, who is in his third season coaching Oldham RUFC, has found it increasingly difficult due to having a new full-time post as a development officer with the Rugby Football League and also studying at night school for a degree.

Steve Fox, Oldham RUFC’s chairman of playing, said: “We were aware at the start of the season Steve would have problems.

“The club asked Steve to carry on and appointed a first-team manager and assistant coaching team to help him.”

Praising Molloy’s efforts, Mr Fox pointed out that when he took over the team appeared destined to be relegated from North Lancs/Cumbria division, but he led them to safety.

And he added that the last two seasons have been ones of consolidation, finishing sixth each time in a competitive league with a team weakened by several players retiring.

“Steve was not afraid to give the younger element from the colts a chance in the senior side and the future looks good when these players mature,” Mr Fox continued.

First-team manager Denis Eddleston, forwards coach Ivan Simister and backs coach Lee Kemp will take over coaching duties.
