SEASON OF SUCCESS . . . Heyside's Mark Hopwood
THE Manchester League season gets under way tomorrow with all four of our local sides in the Premier Division starting at home, write John Gilder.
Newly-promoted Heyside face a stern test against established outfit Old Alts at Crompton House school (3pm) and manager Matt Wheelton, who took over the reins from Geoff Howard at the end of last season, said: "We've had three friendlies and lots of players have been involved and I have learnt some good things, as have the players.
"I have made three new signings who I think will add a lot to our existing squad
"We want to be at the right end of the table and I think we've got a really good group of lads."
Springhead's resurgence late last season which elevated the club to a commendable third-placed finish could well be a springboard for a real crack at the title this time round.
Manager Lee McAllister, whose side entertains Wythenshawe Amateurs at Ashfield Crescent (2pm), said: "We are always looking to improve and that is no different to every season.
"We've got a smaller squad this season but I am happy with the quality, but consistency is always important."
The loss of three key players to Chadderton could well have a major impact on the fortunes of Royton Town, who host Bolton County at Oldham Academy North (3.15pm).
Centre-back Jordan Schofield, midfield-man Carl Schumann and striker Mike Moss have joined the Hallmark Security North West Counties League club where they will be reunited with former Town boss Mark Howard.
Town manager Carl Taylor will have learned much about his side in his debut season. He said: "I am hoping we will be competitive again but the loss of such key players is disappointing, but lads want to move on to a higher level.
"Myself and Ben (Greenidge) are in a rebuilding stage and the first five or six games could be a key to how our season turns out."
Avro's aim this season is very clear as they play their first competitive match at the Vestacare Stadium (formerly the Whitebank Stadium) when they welcome Hindsford, (2pm).
Lee O'Brien has taken over as manager of Avro from Rob Fuller. He said: "It has got to be promotion for us if I'm being honest and our aim is to get into the North West Counties League.
"The facilities at our new home are second to none and we are very much looking forward to playing there."
In contrast to Avro, Hollinwood begin their Division One campaign when they take on Leigh Athletic at Chapel Road (3pm), but the club is under a cloud both to its immediate and long-term future (see separate story).
Chadderton reserves travel to play Boothstown in their opening fixture.
Uppermill begin life in Division Two with a home clash against Atherton LR Development at Churchill playing fields (2pm). Previews of the Lancashire Amateur, Lancashire and Cheshire and Huddersfield and District Leagues to follow.
