ILIAN Markov takes evasive action as Danny Wright moves in
FAILSWORTH super-lightweight Danny Wright was the star of the show at the Oldham Leisure Centre as he saw off Bulgarian opponent Ilian Markov in devastating fashion.
Hot prospect Wright (21) delighted his army of fans as he stopped the previously unbeaten Markov round three of a scheduled six at the VIP Promotions showcase.
The result enhanced the former amateur star's professional record to five wins from five fights.
Wright, trained by Ben Lancaster at the 'Old School Boxing' gym in Middleton, told the Chronicle: "At the end of the day that kid had been three unbeaten, so this has been another good little step on the ladder.
"I felt quite easy about myself, so that's good.
"For me now, it's just about taking the time to prepare well, to build up to fights the right way, and take the right tests at the right time.
"I don't want to be knocking over journeymen all the time. It's about stepping up in the right way from now."
A huge step up now appears to be on the cards for Wright, who is so highly rated by many inside boxing circles.
He hopes to be out in October at the Manchester Arena - part of an undercard at the Frank Warren-promoted super show featuring WBO world lightweight champion Terry Flanagan's next defence and Liam Smith's WBO world super-welterweight title clash against Liam Williams.
It proved a hugely successful night for trainer Lancaster, who also saw his two debutants - Royton pair Joe Eko and Jack Kilgannon - secure points victories.
Super-lightweight Eko (24) was particularly impressive as he took all four rounds in a 40-36 verdict against tough journeyman Kristian 'Mr Reliable' Laight.
Super-middleweight Kilgannon (21) got through a much more stringent test against Daniel Spencer.
Kilgannon appeared nervous throughout much of the four rounds, but did enough to secure a 39-38 points verdict.
